This one page site contains links to Mark's latest version of DOCMaker and includes useful information on his products. You are invited to download version 4.1.1 from that web site or to visit the InfoMac archive, where version 4.1.0 is the latest. A $25 registration fee brings a prompt response that includes a user manual, a copy of the latest version of DOCMaker, and copies of Mark's other programs on a diskette.
When using DOCMaker, it is wise to allocate more than the recommended 2048k if you are importing large volumes of text. With this document, it is strongly suggested that at least 3000k be set as the preferred size for DOCMaker before you attempt to load it into DOCMaker for modification.
DOCMaker will warn users that insufficient memory remains for adding text and provide a safe Save and exit, but Saving a document does take less time if plenty of memory is set aside initially. Reading a stand-alone document requires much less memory than does creating one within the DOCMaker application environment. Saving a large document after changes are made will take some time, since the entire document is rescanned to locate all font information. Do NOT become alarmed if the activity indicator (spinning dial) halts for some seconds during this process. This is an indication that text is being scanned from the sections stored on the hard drive. Increase memory allocation to reduce Save time requirements.
As a user of this document, you may decide to customize it. You must obtain a copy of DOCMaker to do this. The current version does not support drag-and-drop but the opening window provides a very convenient way of choosing an existing document - if your working copies are all kept in the DOCMaker folder. You may also choose to enable several features that are not built into this version of this document - text exporting, for example. Most Classic users will have the Word format printable manual and should use that for hard copy, since its graphics are significantly better quality and its text formatting much more elaborate than are those contained in this version of the tutorial manual.
The FIND feature of a stand-alone document works across all chapters and is incredibly fast. In the DOCMaker creating environment, Find works only within the chapter currently open - as would be true for any standard word processing program.
FIND is assisted by numerous special 'tags' inserted into the text of the document and into the Index at the end of this document. To Instantly (almost) go to the start of the Index section or to ANY SECTION of the Index (items starting with 'A', 'X', or whatever), use a simple *I* FIND argument (for the beginning of the Index) or any other single letter flanked by asterisks.
For anyone seriously interested in document creation, DOCMaker provides a nearly ideal set of tools and a superb end result. You are encourage to try it out - and to register if you use it. This program deserves user support. Mr. Wall responds promptly to DOCMaker users even if they have not registered.
The Missing Font message that a stand-alone DOCMaker document may display on start-up is merely an indication that your Macintosh does not have the exact font (or fonts) or the exact characters in a specific font to match the document's contents. The simplest method of eliminating this message is to obtain and use DOCMaker to reprocess this document. Simply load in the tutorial document (after setting the preferred memory size to 3000k in the Info window for the DOCMaker application) via DOCMaker's File/Open menu choice and then Save it (as a replacement) or Save As a different name to preserve the original. DOCMaker will choose similar fonts that are available on your system and adjust its font table accordingly. Chances are that you will be able to read the document without problems, since font replacement occurs by default automatically.
